Types of Dental Bridges
Dr. Martinson and his team will explain more about the four types of dental bridges that can be used in your procedure when you visit our office for your consultation. In the meantime, here’s a brief overview of each:
TRADITIONAL DENTAL BRIDGES
These bridges are held in place with dental crowns that we place on each tooth on either side of the missing teeth.
CANTILEVER DENTAL BRIDGES
These only require using one dental crown; however, because of this reduction in anchoring, they are not as secure as a traditional bridge.
MARYLAND BRIDGES
Maryland bridges use metal or porcelain as a framework to bond the replacement tooth to the back of a patient’s adjacent teeth.
IMPLANT-SUPPORTED BRIDGES
We secure these bridges to dental implants, providing a strong and stable foundation that closely mimics the natural functionality of your teeth. They are especially beneficial when a patient has more than one tooth that needs replacement.
What is the Process of Getting a Dental Bridge?
Step 1: Consultation and Examination
The first step in getting a dental bridge is to consult with Dr. Martinson. During this initial examination, he will assess your oral health, the condition of your remaining teeth, and your gums. He will also determine if there is enough healthy bone structure to anchor the dental bridge.
Step 2: Tooth Preparation
Once we establish your treatment plan, we will prepare your teeth for the bridge placement. We may prep the neighboring teeth on each side of the missing tooth by removing some enamel to make room for the dental crowns. These teeth will act as anchors for the bridge. We’ll take an impression of the prepared teeth to create a custom bridge that will fit your mouth perfectly.
Step 3: Temporary Bridge Placement
The next step involves placing a temporary bridge to protect the altered teeth until your permanent bridge is ready. During this waiting period, you must be careful when eating and drinking to avoid damaging the temporary bridge. If you experience any discomfort during this time, contact us immediately.
Step 4: Permanent Bridge Placement
Once your permanent dental bridge arrives from the dental lab, you will visit us for the final bridge placement. We will remove the temporary bridge and seat the permanent bridge, which we anchor onto the prepared teeth adjacent to the missing tooth. We will ensure that the bite comfort is accurate and the dental bridge sits comfortably in your mouth. Once Dr. Martinson confirms everything looks good and you confirm everything feels good, you can walk out of the clinic smiling confidently.
